The right to participate. Being heard, feeling safe, and feeling connected are important for all of us, especially during times of significant stress such as an emergency. Our Voice brings together local councils, service providers, and communities to hear from children and young people to ensure their voices and needs are listened to and reflected in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. Children and young people who have experienced disasters such as bushfires, COVID-19 and floods have the opportunity to provide feedback about local emergency management and can also share ideas about what would benefit their peers in the community more broadly. They work together to come up with ideas for improvements based on their experiences, and then choose a method to communicate their recommendations to decision makers.
