At the age of 17, Tristan, has achieved more than most young people his age. He’s secured a trade-based apprenticeship, is working to save up enough money to purchase a car and is in the process of getting his learner’s driver’s licence.
His teachers have described him as a positive peer support for others at his school. Yet, Tristan’s life hasn’t always looked this way. After a complex and challenging childhood, including not always being able to live at home, Tristan found himself engaging in activities that didn’t support his wellbeing. And it was those behaviours that landed him in detention.
54 reasons' Transition from Detention service gives young people a second chance at getting their life back on track. A youth specialist will work with participants to support them to identify their goals and come up with strategies to avoid ending up back in detention.
After transitioning back into his community, Tristan has made it clear he doesn’t want to return to offending and has made drastic changes to support his wellbeing and the positive future he wants for himself. He has even expressed an interest in mentoring other young people who have had similar experiences to his own to let them know there are other options out there for them. And he’s the proof.
